review 1: Although there is no story, this book is interesting, informative, and fun. When I read this for storytime, I would ask the kids what the animals was, and then read the little blurb about the animal. I liked pointing out different things about each animal, like "Wow! This tiger's tooth is as big as my finger :) I didn't cover all the animals, I think I skipped about three or four after the capybara.
review 2: I sure wish I was still doing outreach, if only to booktalk this book! It's primarily comprised of life-size photographs of popular zoo animals, with fun facts (many regarding methods of defecating), as well basic info about this particular animal. The presentation is totally fun, with fold-out pages for some of the more massive animals. You can totally
... more feel the fact that it originally came out in Japan. My only issues with it are that I wish they had a small scale photograph of the whole animal (there are outlines, but not photographs), and I worry about how the animals may have been treated to get the photographs. I remember Sy Montgomery's accounts of how her photographer-partner Nic Bishop handled the animals - she observed that many photographers' methods actually terrify the animal, so that the photographs depict animals in states of fight or flight. I'm certainly not an animal expert, but I wonder why a zoo animal is crying tears (the camel, to get rid of dust, the note says, but why is there dust in a photographer's studio?). It's hard to tell, but none of the animals look particularly relaxed. So I worry. But it's possible that my worries are unfounded, and the photographs really are stunning - you can see each animal's pores. And it will be an easy sell to kids. Awesome title.Although I always struggle with how to booktalk something like this. I feel like all I should have to do is hold it up. But that wouldn't take very long, and I feel like I should say SOMETHING when I do stuff like that. Any ideas, oh booktalkers out there? less
