review 1: This book is anchored in the Hebrew belief in one God. There are many references to God. Many miracles only happen in the book because of this total belief in God. Much of what happens is grounded in the Old Testament of the Bible. The God of Israel enabled the Jewish nomads who have wandered for forty years to become aggressors and begin to go to war with all the pagan cities surrounding them. This novel is caught in the middle of this war. The novel is centred around Rahab, a Cannanite prostitute(zonah)who is introduced to their God. We follow her journey as she is saved by the Israelites when they destroy her city, Jericho. She is saved because she in turn had saved two Hebrews spies who were almost killed but for her intervention. Later she is adopted by the Hebrews a... morend comes to learn their ways with a joy as her love for their(now her)God grows and burgeons. Throughout she struggles with her own guilt and shame at having been a willing zonah even though she gave that up on entering the Israelite way of life. Her increasing feelings for Salmone, one of the leaders only increases her sense of sin. However, it is through this relationship that she begins to see herself as a true child of God. The themes of the redemptive power of love, cleansing through a new start and that ultimate faith in God provide the basis of the novel. This is a religious book and those who share the belief in God will find more and move to a deeper understanding on reading this novel. It ultimately offers us a glimpse of an ancient way of life centred round a one, true God.
review 2: Tessa Afshar is a new author for me. I felt she did well in depicting the hardships that must have come from Rahab converting from a harlot to a life in Israel where harlots were stoned. There certainly was more to the story than Rahab being saved from destruction and living happily ever after in Israel and marrying a leader in Israel. As with all conversions, the process is very difficult at times. But the rewards are everlasting. Although never able to lose mention of her prior lifestyle, she was chosen as one of the great-grandmothers of King David and Jesus Christ. What a legacy! less
