review 1: Tessa Afshar continues the story of Sarah and Darius in this Harvest of Rubies sequel. Although the book spends a lot of time on Sarah's cousin Nehemiah rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, it is integral to the plot. Afshar uses both historical fact and literary license to bring Darius, and the reader, into the understanding that only God can take something ruinous and restore it. I found this an encouraging novel of hope and a deepening love for the God of second chances.
review 2: This title is the sequel to Harvest of Rubies and continues with a mixture of jewish faith, intrigue and Persian cultural history. The main characters are compelling in their complexity. Neither Darius nor Sarah are predictable in their actions or thoughts. That they love one anothe... morer is clear but, whether Darius so steeped in Persian etiquette and rules actually acknowledges his feelings is something we spend the entire book wondering.In the background there is a series of intrigues, first the threat to the King's safety and then the threat to the city of Jerusalem. Darius plays a vital part in both situations. The book talks often of Sarah and Nehemiah's faith(Governor of Judah). Their absolute belief that God will provide for them and their people.The question of faith provides the backbone of the book.We observe Darius begin to change as he starts to show an interest in their Jewish God. The author infuses this novel with her own Christian beliefs. It is essentially a Christian text even though it is written from a Jewish perspective. This book works well as a sequel following the developing relationship between Sarah and Darius and it will be interesting to see if the author writes a third novel continuing their saga. less
