review 1: Pretty much need to have lived in Chicago or at least be a big fan to enjoy this one. Covers the growth of the city’s culture, struggles with race issues, architecture feuds, music, cardinals and mayors, Second City, early TV, and lots more. Not a typical historical read, instead lots of opinions from an author who believes the city’s best days faded by the ’60s. You’ll enjoy this book best if you know names like Kupcinet, Kukla, Sullivan, Garroway, Stritch, Arvey, Mies, Kuh, Mahalia, Sun Ra, Ahlgren, Bronzeville, Studs, Sahlins, St. Columbanus, Universal Studios, and I could go on and on. Rating: 3 out of 5 Chess Record singles.
review 2: Thomas Dyja’s delves into the cultural milieu of Chicago from around 1920-1960. This includes anything from Nels
... moreon Algren to Kukla Fran and Ollie. Dyja through examples posits that Chicago, not New York with America’s cultural driving force during this period. It after all was a hub prior to jet air travel – everyone chugged through Chicago. The narrative sometimes reverses back on itself and as a simple practical person I like a more linear progression – but that is because I am easily confused. All in all The Third Coast is a unique perspective on the city I love. less
