review 1: I needed something to read while traveling and only had my phone. This was a free giveaway so I decided to take a chance. it was interesting since it made me actually look up the details that were mentioned to see if the events were real (they were) plus I have studied the disappearances in Argentina and this linked into them. I thought the book unwound slowly (maybe a little too slowly) but the story developed well.
review 2: I had a difficult time getting enthused about the characters in this book. There is definitely a mystery, and there is a crime. But the characters seem rather threadbare - intelligent upper crusty sort of people who look for things to do or amuse themselves with rather than real people. The mystery is somewhat gripping, although you
... more wish they would get on with it. The ending is good - it makes a good point - but the characters are still insipid even in learning what they do. less

I loved this book. It was a dark thriller that was also very moving and almost lyrical.

so much overwriting in service of such a slight story

Well, that was pretentious.
