review 1: Brilliant plot, beautifully written, and memorable characters. This epic and moving novel covers the Great War experiences of two Australian nurses who are sisters. No battle scenes, but there is plenty of grim intensity as the soldiers' wounds and deaths are described in the hospitals and clearing stations. As wonderful as this novel was, I was a bit perplexed by the alternative endings, but then, survival can be a game of degrees.
review 2: I nearly put this book down 6 days ago thinking I just didn't want to make the effort to finish it. The only reason I did was because I enjoyed the WWI history the novel contained, and I especially found it interesting reading about the Australian involvement in this war. The author touched on a wide range of topics i... moren the novel within the WWI framework--which made the book worth plodding on through. However, I found the writing style very difficult and it definitely distracted from my enjoyment of the book. The lack of punctuation to indicate dialogue was particularly distressing because it tended to make everything run together. However, there are far too many words. I agree wholeheartedly with another reviewer who stated that the book would have been much better with about 100 fewer pages. Although the plot line and historical aspects had the potential to make this a great book, the writing style make it very difficult reading. Although the plot focused around 2 Australian nurses who were sisters, their character development was so ambiguous that I never felt I had a good feeling for who they really were as persons. less
