review 1: I was completely drawn in by the premise - notorious, folk-hero bank robbers wake up in the morgue, with absolutely no explanation for what has just happened. Although the book in general is not funny, per se, the first scene is very much so, just because of the absurdity of it all. The book goes backwards, building their story, and then forward, as they try for that one last score that will set them free to start a new life. The tension builds, as their re-appearance causes them even greater notoriety, and the law-enforcement agencies try to stop them once and for all. Well written, deeply entertaining, and a fascinating portayal of a very specific place and time. Loved it.
review 2: On one level this is a book with a fairly straightforward and well done plot:
... more bank robbers during the Depression who become folk heroes, run from the law, try to take care of their careworn mother and deal with romantic relationships. If the book was just about this, it would be pretty good as Mullen does a nice job with this part of the plot. But Mullen adds an interesting twist: the Firefly Brothers somehow keep coming back to life. They don't understand it nor do we ever fully understand it. This twist makes a standard work stand out. less
