review 1: This is yet another in a series of the Hugo-nominee 'freebies' made available by Tor.com that I downloaded. In this offering we join the village of Doi Saket as they prepare for the Thai festival of Loi Krathong. While they are all busy preparing their krathong and their wishes to launch on the river where the goddess died, one young village boy is perplexed. He has no desires and, therefore, has no idea what to wish for. An amusing, clever tale, with just enough information about Thailand's Loi Krathong festival to make it doubly entertaining.
review 2: Magical realism isn't always my favorite genre, with exceptions such as the metaphorical "One Hundred Years of Solitude," or the comedic "Shaolin Soccer." This little story by a gifted young Dutch writer does c... moreontain much gentle humor, as we observe a Thai village make its annual wish to the local river goddess. But just as love can turn to hate, humor can turn to cutting irony. We're not so sure we got what we wished for. Nominated for the 2013 Hugo for best short story. less
