review 1: What a book to end the year on. What I'm really thinking about after wrapping up this book is how much I love the technology I read it on. I mostly read this book on kindle, primarily my kindle or sometimes Cait's kindle, because it is the nice backlit version. This was also the first book I read using the whispersync feature of syncing professionally read audio books and the ebook offered by Amazon. It was pretty awesome. Sometimes I'll check out both the audiobook version and the ebook version from the digital collection of my library and try to read it with some of both, but that can often be tedious enough not to be worth the experience, not to mention that I have to time the checkouts right together. So, anyway, having an audiobook sync automatically was awesome. My d... moreevices are all a few generations old, so the syncing I think was a little less effortless than I think it would have been on newer devices that sync in the background better, but it was still much easier than trying to manually find my place. There is simply no way that I would have been able to finish this book in 8 days lugging around a 700 page book with me wherever I went. Most of my reading comes in small spurts while watching or playing with the kids, especially as Cait has been sick. Pulling the kindle out of my pocket, instead of pulling a 700 page tome out of a backpack or small suitcase, was much more conducive to pushing through this book bit by bit. Nothing beats a great little volume of poetry that sits beautifully in your hand, with great binding and a great book smell, but 700 pages is never, ever going to be fun, no matter how good it smells. What did I actually think of the book you ask? It was great. I'm not versed enough in economics to really vet the details of this book, or even the broader themes, probably, but it seemed to be well writeen, deeply researched and balanced well serious academic writing with approachable explanations. I especially liked how the author was able to pull in literary references like Balzac and Austin with regularity (although I don't think I've ever read any Balzac). Obviously that was a point of study for him at some point in the past. From my limited experience with the study of economics, mainly through a few other books that I have read that treat the subject and through my own life experience, this book really seems to get at the heart of the matter, placing wealth inequality in its historical contexts, predicting humbly yet convincingly its probably path and effects in the future, and laying out some solutions that seem fairly plausible for dealing with inequality in the future. Just don't ask me to explain any of his formulas off the top of my head.

It is a likely a static view to how social wealth is occupied in society.
