review 1: I wanted to like this book, which is about a man in a mental institution who insists that he is Christopher Columbus. I don't think I am giving away anything when I say that he is not, and is a man who suffered a tragedy and is recovering from that tragedy by hiding behind Columbus. Everyone recovers in his or her own way, but I find the way that this man recovers to be, ultimately, disappointing. When we find out who exactly this man is and why he insisted he was Columbus, the story he tells, especially in reference to women, does not follow the tragedy he suffered. Really, it seems like gratuitous indulgence, something the author is doing merely to titilate the audience.

... moreast 50 pages. But I had a hard time getting through the first 250 pages. It rambled too much for me. The main character--a delusional patient in a mental hospital who thinks he's Christopher Columbus--told endless stories that had elements of the present and 15th century. At the end, it makes sense and the author ties up the loose ends, but I had a hard time tracking with Columbus' tales. less
