review 1: This book was written by a very talented Author who at times produced moments here and there to capture ones interest. Unfortunately the vast majority of it was flat, and resembled the dull unimaginative ramblings of a snobby dinner guest. It felt quite truly like a long, long long long University paper--which likely is what inspired the novel to begin with. The word Chanel 5 made an appearance in nearly every sentence, and either than being regarded as sexy, failed in actual sexiness. I gave an extra star to this book not for Author's effort, but for occasionally capturing something that truly was in essence all the words used to describe this infamous Perfume. I just wish it could be practical read for those of us out here who are not 'noses'.
review 2: This
... morewas an interesting look at the creation, distribution and various personalities involved with Chanel No. 5. There is a reference that during the 70's it was looked upon as a fragrance for a previous generation. That's exactly how I always have felt about it - it was for little old ladies. Now that I've learned more about it, I'll have to try a sample next time I'm at a perfume counter.I read this on my Kindle so the numerous index references were not in sync. That was my major complaint and it really has nothing to do with the book itself. The author did extensive research. I had no idea there had been so much written about Coco Chanel. The author references perfumes from days gone by that make one wish they had been alive back then to experience them.I may be wrong but I don't believe fragrances are worn as much as they used to be. That makes me a little sad after reading this book. less
