review 1: This was like reading required reading for college; not terrible if it's required, but definitely not interesting enough to bother with otherwise. There is very little information about the Barbe-Nicole Cliquot -- no letters, few contemporay accounts-- so the author pieces together a story from what is going on generally in that time and place and record books. A fine bit of historical research, but boring to the lay person. And even to the historian, it suffers from the author's contention about what Barbe-Nicole "must have thought."

... moreservations were repeated several times, however, overall the book was a good history of the business of Veuve Cliquot and how it was affected by the challenges of politics, modernization and nature. Descriptions of the region sent me to Google and peaked an interest to visit the area. The notes and bibliography provided some good reading as well.My main complaint was that the font of the book was light and small. I don't require glasses to read, but I found the font slowed my reading of this book. less
