review 1: This was a disappointment. The concept was fascinating, but it failed to live up to the promise. Yes, during World War II the Hotel Ritz was home to a number of French as well as the German conquerors, and they are named here. The book is full of name-dropping. But for the most part, that is all it is. The names are dropped, but that is all we know about them. The bartender is introduced, he is worried and—that is it. We learn no more about him. Some refugees were hidden in closets and passages of the hotel. Who was hiding them? What happened to them? Did they all escape, the hiders and the hidden? Who knows? We are never told. The most fully presented character in the book is Ernest Hemingway, in all his drunken braggadocio. But that picture of him can be seen in a dozen... more books. There is nothing new here. That is the problem.
review 2: This was absolutely fascinating. To read about the history of a famous hotel and the impact events there played on the world at large during WWII was interesting to say the least, and the impact the staff, artists, authors, and socialites who resided there at different points was very neat to learn. I finished this in less than 24 hours because I couldn't put it down. If you like history or WWII or suspense, give it a go. less
