review 1: Aaron BlainBlock 210/7/2013Rash, written by Pete Hautman, takes place in a futuristic time period inside the United States. The United States has become an ultra-safe environment with an ungodly amount of rules and regulations. It is a struggle to live life enjoyably due to the constant surveillance from government officials. For example, walking on the street without helmets and body pads or drinking a beer in the comfort of your home is considered unsafe. Simple things like this can get you locked up for years at government work camps doing whatever the government needs with no pay for you. The main character and narrator, Bo Martens, has inherited a short temper from his dad, Al Martens and his grandfather, Gramps, which will lead him into a lot of trouble conside... morering the world Bo lives in. His grandfather was born in 1990 and is fed up with the society today. All Gramps can remember is the good old days when there was actually something worth living for. One day Bo’s short temper gets the best of him when he confronts his enemy Karlohs’s Mink, in consequence Bo is sent to a work camp just like his father was. At the work camp he experiences a much different and more hostile world compared to the one he came from. The owner of the government plant is corrupt and Bo wants nothing to do with him. The whole time he is there his main goal is to escape. Throughout the novel the author did a great job at allowing me to visualize what was happening. It is so hard to imagine a society so foreign from your own, but through his work the picture of this futuristic society was crystal clear. In this quote the author is explaining the precautions that are taken before a sprinter can run a race. “AtherSafe shoes with lateral ankle support and four layers of memory gel in the think soles, knee pads, elbow pads, neck brace, tooth guard, wrist monitor, and FDHHSS-certified sports helmet. We raced on Adzorbium track with its five centimeters of compacted gel-foam topped by a thick sheet of artificial latex. It’s like running on a sponge.” From these words I got a very clear picture of the precautions taken before a race. The author also did a great job developing the main character, Bo Martens. During the book the reader gets a great sense of how Bo is feeling and exactly what he is thinking. There are no questions when it comes to Bo and his personality. The author, Pete Hautman, answers them all for you. The one complaint I have about this book is the ending. It ends so abruptly and leaves the reader wanting more. It’s hard to describe what happens without ruining the ending. I will just say that the author is leading you up to an event and the book suddenly stops. When I finished the book I turned the page thinking there was more to read and was surprised to see an empty page. After reading the book Rash, I would definitely recommend it to people with a love for action and drama. The author kept me interested throughout the novel developing a new twist in the plot with every turn of the page. The book is a fairly easy read but don’t let that deter you from thinking it may be boring and childish. Rash is a national book award winner and has received many fantastic reviews from many journals, including Publishers Weekly and the School Library Journal. Rash is a great choice for high school students seeking a fast pace action filled drama.
review 2: Another excellent entry in the Bug Man novels. As is standard for this series, the reader is never in any doubt as to "whodunnit;" our enjoyment is in seeing Nick figure it out. Two of the strongest female characters from the previous novels make appearances here, which I enjoyed. I also appreciated the plot, which centered on agro-terrorism, although frankly it was fell into the "all too plausible" category. Willful destruction of the entire US corn crop... frightening stuff! I am giving this one a mere three stars because I was a little annoyed by the gimmicky ending, after which the author requests his readers vote on two alternates on his website. I would have preferred the character make his mind up on his own. I also could not help but notice two minor continuity errors surrounding the character of Kathryn Guilford: this book stated that the fatal car accident of "Shoo Fly Pie" occurred when she was four (that book said she was seven), and that Guilford was her maiden name (it was her first husband's.) I am sure I'd read the book in question more recently than both its author and most readers since I just picked up the series a month ago, but still - sloppy work! less

The dialogue will occasionally make you roll your eyes, but it's a fun read.
