review 1: I loved the book, Tim Winton's writing is, as usual, brilliant and I looked forward to reading this book every day. I was led through to the end with great expectations but was rushed to the end in the last chapters, almost like Tim Winton didn't know where to go with it or how to end it and just quickly finished it. Many things were left unanswered, did Keely have brain tumour? Did Keely die? I've been left gasping!!!
review 2: This was my second book by Australian author Tim Winton. I will say I enjoyed his novel "Cloudstreet" much better. This is a dark and somewhat bleak story of a man named Tom Keely who is very beaten down. He lives in Perth and his life is so depressing and complicated. For me Winton was just too wordy in so many parts of this book.
... more I did like the two females who where of utmost importance in Tom's life, Gemma and Doris. There is also a young boy named Kai in this novel, who has a major connection with Tom. I wished the story would have moved along more smoothly. I had a really tough time reading this book. I wanted to find some closure towards the end,so kept trudging on, but felt like there was really no true ending. In my opinion a pretty depressing book. less

Very disappointing novel. Drunken and disappointed eco-activist wrapped up with past.

Over-written, under-nuanced.
