review 1: "Toby Alone" and its sequel "Toby and the Secrets of the Tree" map out a beautiful and imaginative world. This is probably a "young adult" book, but it is truly ageless. My 50-something friend gave me these books, and my 30-something self was glued to them from page 1. de Fombelle writes (and is translated) in a way that makes you immediately feel close to the characters. I wanted to embrace one character and punch another. Emotions ran high, indeed. You will cheer for Toby and his family and friends, want to protect them and take them under your wing. However, there is a dark force at work, and these good, hard-working millimeter-tall tree people show that strength is not in the size of your body, but in the authenticity of your heart and soul.On the other side of that, t... morehere are scary parallels between the tree world and our earth, and a big mob boss like Joe Mitch earily reminds us of other leaders with corrupted power. Mitch is known as "Friendly Neighbor," an ironic title that instantly sparked visions of NK's "Dear Leader." This character's blatant disregard for his tree home reminded me of certain policial powerhouses who ignore environmental implications with a push to drill, drill, drill, at the expense of everyone and everything, and in the name of good old fashioned greed. That said, de Fombelle creates a feel-good story that will have you riveted... to the last branch!

This was such a boring sequel. I LOVED the first book- but this one just didn't 'bring it.' Sorry!

I liked the conclusion, the way every character found their corner of the sky again at the tree.

Génial, un ton légèrement au-dessous de son prédécesseur ...mais fantastique quand même.
