Vango
review 1: Right before he becomes a priest, Vango is accused of murder and on the verge of being arrested in Paris. He takes off across the city roofs, leading the police and some mysterious others on a merry chase across the countryside. Running for his life is nothing new for Vango, though, since he has long lived a life filled with mystery and secrets. Even his roots and how he came to the isolated island where he grew up are veiled in mystery but knowing that someday someone might arrive there to kill him. Although there are those who would describe him as paranoid, in Vango’s eyes his subterfuge is grounded in the certainty that his life is in danger. Readers will love being hurled from one place to another, sometimes atop a zeppelin as it flies through the air, sometimes rac... moreing by foot, all described in heart-racing fashion. The book features a fast pace, a complicated plot that weaves in various characters, settings, and time periods as well as interesting characters whose loyalty to Vango is unshakeable. Readers will be haunted by Vango and the events in his life when the book concludes. It’s hard to decide whether he is incredibly lucky or incredibly cursed. Having a little romantic interest blooming between a couple of the characters heightens the book's appeal as does the intriguing character of Ethel.
review 2: In the last days before the start of World War II, a young man whose past is a mystery finds himself pursued by unknown forces bent on his destruction. De Fombelle's thriller has a rich cast of adult and teen characters who hop from country to country via train, fast car, and even dirigible, and whose connections to each other are slowly revealed through flashbacks that are carefully doled out for maximum suspense. But while the plot moves quickly, the focus is still on the characters, their relationships, and the political conspiracies at work behind the scenes. Tween fans of historical fiction and anyone who enjoys a thriller with some substance will enjoy this one. Just don't expect all you questions to be answered in volume one! less

An imaginative read, action, adventure and war all combined in a tale of tragic comedy.

Great history, loved the idea that the Empire State Building could tie up zeppelins

Truly lovely -- everything that an adventure in the old-fashioned style should be.

It isn't gripping me so giving up and moving on.
