review 1: Sora's quest was an amazing novel...one that I have fallen in love with. I finished it only yesterday.I have fallen in love with all the characters, but Dorian is my favourite. He was so kind, caring, flirty too. He was the only character to show any kindness to Sora in the beginning. When he died I cried...and it makes me emotional to even think about it.I was upset at the reader for killing him off...I had hoped he and Sora might have gotten together...I loved him so much! Stupid Volcrian and his wraiths! I curse them all .-.Crash is a very mysterious character...one that I have actually become quite fond of. Hes handsome, and protective. And its nice to imagine him falling in love with Sora.I would definitely recommend this book to read! It is extraordinar... morey. :)
review 2: The first installment of The Cat's Eye Chronicles was exciting and fast paced. I'm always down for a good fantasy read, and T. L. Shreffler does not disappoint. The beginning of this book starts out with teen Sora who longs to run away from the stifling life of a noblewoman, only to have her wish granted in the most unexpected and unwelcome way imaginable.Kidnapped from her Blooming (the equivalent of a coming-out party) by the assassin who has just killed her father, Sora must face insurmountable challenges amongst her fellow companions who start out as her captors, but soon become so much more.I was extremely impressed with the way the author handled the developing relationship between Sora and the assassin, Crash. In other words there was actually some development instead of most plot lines and relationships that involve two people falling in love, and then one day later having crazy sex for no apparent reason other than the author deciding that's what would happen next.Crash is a complicated character, and for good reason. Considering his background and the lessons and mantras pounded into his mental processes since the day he could understand them, he behaved, interacted and responded to Sora and the additional characters in the book exactly the way one would expect. I never once sat there thinking to myself, "No, I don't think an assassin brought up to shun normal emotions like love and affection, and instructed to shun personal attachments, would ever behave like this," because the author takes this wonderful character and allows him to evolve slowly. It makes the tension between Crash and Sora so much more compelling, and plays a major part in my reasons for moving on to the second and then third book. I just couldn't wait for that ah ha moment when Crash could actually acknowledge that he cared for Sora. And those ah ha moments were like tiny bread crumbs leading me toward the next wonderful moment where we see Sora and Crash grow and progress together as well as individually.Sora is not used to the life of a peasant, but she handles every challenge that comes with a fierce determination to survive. She is a strong female character, and there can never be enough strong female characters in my opinion.Let's discuss world building. Such a crucial element in fiction, but especially necessary in fantasy. The world Sora lives in, the customs, classes, races and traditions are well developed, explored and explained with crystal clear detail. So much so, that I believe if I were ever blessed enough to find myself transported to this world the author created, I would know how to behave, but most importantly how to survive, providing I aligned myself with two Wolfy's and a nice looking member of the Sixth Race. Just a little joke. Go read the book, and then come back and laugh. LOL Seriously, go read it.I could go into more detail about the next two books in the series, but that will have to wait for an entirely different review on an entirely different day. All I can say is thank you for such a fantastic fantasy series. I look forward to reading the next book. less
