review 1: I was impressed by the tone and texture of this mystery, set in fracking-hunting-meth inflected rural Pennsylvania. As in any good police procedural, the investigator, Henry Farrell, has his own sensitive history and relation with the community. And as with many such novels, the resolution of the main mystery comes a bit out of left field--not something that could have been guessed by the reader. I also felt like there were loose ends--or was I just not reading carefully enough to figure out the significance of the woman found in the boggy grave? Perhaps more will be learned in Bouman's next Henry Farrell novel?
review 2: One of the blurbs on the back suggested that if I liked Woodrell, I'd love this book. Almost set it aside upon seeing that. Amazingly the
... more blurber was right. This is reminiscent of Woodrell in quality of description and sense of place. I enjoyed it immensely. Let me confess that it felt easier to relate to characters in this book. They are rural but not quite so wild as Woodrell's group. Ready for the next Bouman. less

I found the plot hard to follow but the sense of place is very well done.
