review 1: Read this immediately after finishing Doughnut (which has more to do with what's available in eBook at the library than any deep desire to read Tom Holt). I can confidently say that few people have thought - or at least followed through on that thought - to write a book about ... what this is about. The multiverse makes another appearance (though different in nature than Doughnut's), and I didn't see the twist(s) coming, because when it's baked into such a weirdness pie, it's easy to miss.
review 2: 1 Star: EXTREMELY disappointing.GoodReads classes this as "J. W. Wells & Co. #7" and yet, this is as far away from actually being a proper JW Wells book that its not even funny. Fair enough, anything after the 4th book isn't a 'true' JW Wells book anymore, but at
... more least carried on some of the names and ideas.Lets look at the first 3 books in the JW Wells series.. lovable loser joins JW Wells.. magic consultants. Now look at Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Sausages. The book continually refuses to use the word magic and tries to twist it around to being a type of science nobody understands yet.None of the original characters are involved with the bare exception of a gratuitous and tenuous use of the name Paul Carpenter our hero from the first 3 books - and that is only on the name of a library. What characters there are, are completely unlikable and thoroughly forgettable. To the story - boring, overly complicated (in what I can only assume is to build for a crescendo of OH!!!!'s that will come at the end when he bothers to explain things). Painfully obvious in some parts, bewilderingly confusing in others.I hope Tom Holt looks through these reviews, and if so, please bring back the J.W. Wells & Co that you started the series so well with. less
