review 1: This was one interesting book! (I really wanted to read it since it is set in Tacoma, which is only about 30 minutes from where I live.)Josh and Aaron Peshik's family move into a house that is very odd. For example, the floors are all slanted or "tilting". They don't know why. And there are strange words and scientific notes and equations that are written on the walls. Plus there is a talking rat and his family. Despite all these odd things, Josh and Aaron really want to stay in this house. Otherwise they would have to move back into a small apartment with their parents and grandpa...and after the luxury of having their own space that just won't do.But of course with all the oddities there are the mysteries as to why there are oddities. And Josh and Aaron need to solve the... morem soon before things get any worse. Like I said, interesting. I liked how each chapter felt like its own little vignette of a story. I liked how the house was loved despite all the odd characteristics. I liked the mysteries and the fantastical bits. I liked reading about places that I actually could picture (since I had been to Tacoma many times). But that being said...it was still a bit odd for me. I would read a chapter or two and then forget about the book for a couple of days. It didn't pull me to finish it right away. Eventually I wanted to know how everything turned out and the mystery of why the house was how it was. But I didn't have the "must read" feeling.I think this would be a fun book to read aloud as a bedtime story for elementary-school-aged kids. One chapter per night. And they might like the quirks a bit more than I did. I enjoyed the book. I just wasn't 100% sold on it.
review 2: A very quick and fun read for kids of all ages (even very old ones like me). The story centers on Josh and his younger brother Aaron as they move into the strangest house on the block, which is saying a lot since the other houses feature a grumpy hoarder, a crazy man who never stops talking and often has a hearse cruising around.Josh and his family have some work to do both the settle into their new house; the floors are all tilted inward three degrees and the walls are covered in bizarre and cryptic diagrams and messages. The book had a lot of strange things going on, some sections didn't seem to fit perfectly in with the rest of the story, but it was all very fun to read so it's easy to overlook. There was one especially strange scene in the book, that I thought was really pretty gruesome, not really sure what the author was thinking. In the scene Josh's father gets bitten by a rat and once he manages to shake it off he crushes the rat's skull under foot. Aaron immediately bursts into tears at the death of the baby rat, then they meet the rat's father and family all mourning the loss of their son. But, soon after apparently the rat forgives Dad for killing one of his many children and they get on fine. It was just a little creepy and harsh to me. less

We loved this oddball tale about a family in Tacoma. I would tell you more but that would ruin it!
Nick
Nice, not my favorite, but I would highly recommend it to the right reader.
