review 1: My brother loaned me this book because he knew I'd love it, and I did. The premise is that one day, a large number of people disappear, seemingly at random, in what might be The Rapture or might just be something else. We are never told how many people vanish; enough to be noticed, not enough to really shut down anything we're used to. The book does not waste time trying to explain the disappearance. It's a necessary event to get to the setup that the author wants to describe - how do people cope with profound loss? He tenderly describes a half-dozen broken people meandering about suburbia and trying to reconnect with their lives, and over the course of the book they start to shift their focus from dwelling on the loss to tackling the challenges of moving forward. The endi... moreng was a little abrupt, but I think that nicely fit the shock disappearance responsible for the whole premise, and I am grateful for the 350 pages I got to spend with this band of survivors.
review 2: I loved this story -- I confess I found the book after I had become hopelessly hooked on the HBO series. I wish I had read the book first. What grabbed my attention was the sort of alternative idea of "the rapture": the Fundamentalist Christians' theology gets it all wrong, so now what do we do with what happened? I do have to say I was disappointed with the ending, although it ends the way it should end. less

Wooden characters. Preposterous plot. No sense of place. Pedestrian writing.
