review 1: I am not really sure how to rate this book. I was very emgaged by these short stories...they were gripping and sometimes funny and always heartbreaking. Overall, many felt predictable to me and I wasn't sure if I liked that feeling or not. As a group, these stories are about the often small choices we make that can have profoundly devestating life effects. Or perhaps it is about the real anger and sadness that lies underneath what sometimes seems like small, possibly insignificant feeling choises that are in fact, life destroying. A drunken affair, a smack in a moment of rage..those types of choices are common in these stories...a few are about momentary breakdowns leading to more positive reaching out to others...but mostly, these are sad. Engagingly told...but not ... morereally life affirming-LOL.
review 2: I'm a huge Perrota fan, so way too biased for sure, but fascinated by so many of these stories. Not a clean read by any means, but the subject of humanity in its not greatest moments and also in its small but redemptive moments made each read a win and sucked me in from the get go. The fact that I'm still privately wondering about the mom who slapped a high school senior, on senior's night, for his misogynistic ways or what happens when spouses let life's traumas slowly destroy their marriages means this author wrote something that really spoke to me. less

F-word 4 times, I think, in the first short story. I didn't have the heart to continue . . .

the problem with short stories is that they end just when I'm really interested.
