review 1: Tom Rob Smith is hands down the master of cliff hangers. Please don't start this book late at night, because you won't get any sleep! A man gets torn between his father, who tells him his mother belongs into an asylum to get treated for insanity, and a mother who pleads for his help because she is the victim of an elaborate conspiracy that his father is part of. Smith masterfully keeps readers in the dark about who is the true villain in an idyllic but isolated rural Swedish town, where there are no secrets and yet unspeakable things can happen behind closed doors. Till the last pages, the author keeps it a mystery whether the gripping stories the son has to sort through are are lies, figments of imagination or reality. It all becomes clear in a grand conclu... moresion.
review 2: I borrowed this book simply because of the author, having enjoyed his previous Soviet detective books. I didn't even read the blurb about the plot because I needed a book right then and there and I figured Tom Rob Smith was a safe bet. Although the book turned out to be nothing like I expected I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a mystery, but a very intimate, family-based one. The story focuses almost entirely on the dialog between a mother and son but it is compelling from the beginning to the end. Great change of pace for me and the author! less
