review 1: This was a hard read, Smith has a way of putting you in the front seat, like at a movie theatre, strapping you down and holding you there to you can barely take it anymore...never letting you go fully until the end. All 3 of the book in this series, take you through one of the roughest periods in Russian history, well in child 44, you got 2 of the roughest, and you feel every moment, you feel cold, you feel hungry, you feel sick with dread and sick with "grossness"...
review 2: Really unique detective story. Usually you have a dead body within the first few chapters, and spend the rest of the book either following the detective as he figures out whodidit, or following the criminal trying to get away with murder. In this book there is not a dead body until almo
... morest half way through the book, and the search for the killer is really not the focus of the story. A lot of focus on life in the Soviet Union, both under Stalin as well as the 20 years after. less

Best and last book of the Trilogy including Child 44 and The Secret Speech !!!

A little less compelling than the first two books in the trilogy.

Unthrilling. The section in Afghanistan is good though.
