review 1: I thoroughly enjoyed Child 44, the first of this trilogy, and eagerly started The Secret Speech anticipating a similar mystery with an equally exciting twist...I was a little disappointed. Although this story picks up right where Child 44 leaves off, there really isn't much of a mystery, and this is more a story of revenge. The Secret Speech is delivered by a leader of the new Russian regime, which essentially speaks to the evils of Stalin's rule and how all those involved with the wrongful imprisonment and torture of innocents should now be persecuted. As Leo Demidov was former MGB, he and his family are targeted by a ruthless couple who he imprisoned years ago. His foster daughter is kidnapped, and he must thrust himself into an impossible situation to save her. That... more's essentially the gist of the story, and did not contain many thrills or a plot that drove me to turn the pages. I'm glad to have read the second of this story, and will hope the third and final installment returns to the magic of Child 44.
review 2: This is the second book of Smith's Demidov trilogy. It is a trilogy I find deeply rewarding because of its perspective. I know of no other author producing a fictional mystery series which takes place within the post World War II political milieu of Soviet Russia. Three stars because the story itself lacks cohesion but, well worth the time to read (deplore?) and marvel at the suffering of the people of that time and place. less
