review 1: Enjoyed this book, very different from her first book ('Addition') which I thought was so good, the blurb bills this one as the tale of a working-class family in 1939 in the Mebourne suburb of Richmond, stating that the character Kip Westaway 'is about to live through the most important day in his young life' - however, at the end of that chapter, the eight subsequent chapters all tell the stories of different members of the family and related characters but also jumps forward and back in time so you get a quite fragmented picture of what happened in 1939 and what is happening 'now'. It's a quite moving tale but takes a bit of 'working things out' in the mind of the reader (which is perhaps no bad thing sometimes!) - just a bit of an unexpected 'format' really but overall ... morestill liked the book - 8/10.
review 2: I loved this book. Jordan has such a talent for writing a book that is easy to read - I read this in just a few days - but one that is still intellectually stimulating and that contains some beautiful writing. When I began reading, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it - the book is told from the perspectives of nine different people and I had trouble engaging with the second voice in the book, Stanzi, but after that I was absolutely seduced. I especially liked the way that Jordan shows us the character of Connie through the eyes of all the other characters, but doesn't let us into Connie's mind or give Connie a voice until right at the end, after we know Connie's fate. It made the ending just so much more bittersweet. less
