review 1: I liked Addition, an earlier book, so I was predisposed to like this one also. It did charm me and the organisation of the book, though at first confusing, added mystery to the story as the reader tries to figure out just what is happening. Each 'day' is a significant day in the life of one of the characters, so you know there are at least 9 significant characters. However there is a 10th character, that is the city of Richmond, now an inner suburb of Melbourne but at the time one where poor people lived and all knew each other. Set during World War II and then one and two generations later, it is tragic, but hopeful and full of love.
review 2: I became intrigued in the concept of this book when I heard the author interviewed. Toni Jordan had come across t... morehe picture on the front of the book and had wondered about the story behind it. So, she decided to create a story for the picture. However, her story is told through nine different characters who cover multiple generations. Each character presents one day that profoundly affects his or her life. Through each of their single day stories, a picture of a family emerges. I often found myself looking back through the chapters as small details became important when seen from the view of a different character later on. The concept is interesting but it is also a well written and entertaining book. I liked the characters and the families and how their lives were interwoven. less
