review 1: It has been many years since I read The Grapes of Wrath, and I don't mean to put this book on par with that by making a comparison. Yet that's what I likened this to as I was trying to think of the sort of book this is. It is similar in that it tells a story of the oppressed, downtrodden, unfortunate, poor--in this case the people of Haiti and the suffering associated with the recent, devastating earthquake--by detailing a few characters and a few experiences in a historical fiction sort of light. It has some elements of LDS fiction as well, though not as much as I expected. I thought it had good perspectives on caring and sacrifice. I thought it told a unique story that didn't always follow predictable paths and that helped me consider the different sorts of experien... moreces that would be had in such a widespread calamity as the Haiti earthquake.
review 2: I enjoyed reading about Haiti and the recent earthquake there through this story Toni wrote, although it was a bit depressing. I thought I might like to know what things were/are really like there, but then that might be even more depressing. I am glad for all the aid the Church and others were able to give Haiti, as well as friends who were able to adopt children from there, but it's never enough, is it? The best thing we humans can give each other is love - to share our love and the love of the Savior, no matter where we are or in what circumstances we are in. That in itself can make life worth living. less
