review 1: I wanted to enjoy this book. I wanted to have that familiar feeling of not being able to go to sleep because I did not want to finish this book but that feeling did not come. It was a good story, nicely written and with a clever twist at the end but that is the extent of the compliments. This is Tony Parsons first crime novel and it shows. There is nothing at all wrong with the writing but unfortunately there is the feeling of 'I'm going to throw everything that I have learnt about the police force into this novel' which unfortunately comes across as slightly patronising and irritating. It is a good read but it's not the thrill ride that I was looking for. There are vast improvements in the last third of the book but even then it feels slightly rushed. The twist sho... moreuld have come a little bit earlier and could have been developed more. The murder bag is the first in a series of books involving DC Wolfe and hoping that things will improve with his second book.
review 2: This was the book club's choice and not a genre I would normally choose to read. The main character DCI Max Wolfe is not your typical maverick cop, he's a single parent for starters and comes across as flawed and human. The story cracks along at a good pace, and even though I'd figured out who'd done it about half way through I still enjoyed it, not my usual type of book to read but very enjoyable. less
