review 1: Murder Bag by Tony Parsons was for me a conundrum. On the one hand there was great prose and characterisation, but this was offset by tedious references to dogs and boxing. I feel the crime genre is all about plot and pace and this book was, for me, a little lacking in both. It was just all too obvious. A bit too contrived, as though the author had tried too hard.I found it difficult to believe that a lowly Detective Constable would be allowed as much free reign as he seemed to be given to investigate and strike out on his own. And be allowed to participate in high-powered meetings with very much higher ranking officers than himself. It just didn’t ring true and that was the problem, I think.

... morer old group photo links him to the serial killer's other victims, all public school boys, each privileged and successful...but do some people deserve to die?Enter DC Max Wolfe, the creation and crime genre debut of Tony Parsons.....in a recent interview, Parsons said he wanted to write a crime novel and emulate the great writers in this field such as Lee Child and Ian Rankin. Clearly, there are elements of both, with a hint of Child's fetish for weaponry, and echo's of the lonely copper against the established blue order, would bring a smile to his Scottish counterpart: Inspector Rebus. Both Wolfe and Rebus are wrestling with their own social demons, while refreshingly, Wolfe relies on a triple espresso to get through his day...Parsons plays to his obvious strengths as a writer and creates a well rounded story, leaving you wanting more and hoping this could be the start of a whole series of Wolfe adventures.....I, for one, will be looking forward to 2015 and the next planned book: 'The Slaughter Man'.....8/10PS The opening chapter to our introduction to Wolfe was outstanding.... less
