review 1: I think I'm in love with a new-to-me writer--Tony Parsons. The MURDER MAN (also known as THE MURDER BAG) is his first novel in the Max Wolfe series. I love the writing and I love the character of Max, who is a tenacious detective but also a devoted single father The scenes with his little daughter and their little dog are among the best. If you read this, don't be put off by the intensity of the first couple of chapters which lead into the rest of the wonderful story about Max, his job, and his little family. A bonus in this book is all the "local color" and infused history of the London area.
review 2: I received a free copy of this book via the GoodReads First Reads programme, and I was very pleasantly surprised by what I found (although I was left with some
... more reservations: really a 3.75/5). In his first novel, Parsons walks an unsteady line between social commentary and entertainment, and doesn't always tread very carefully. His female characters, and his attitude towards them, left something to be desired, though he did invite consideration of some gender issues. Overall, his thriller writing was the strongest weapon in his arsenal, but the attempts to make his novel more than that make Parsons a cut above his competitors. less

Overall a good read but a bit uneven. Has the feel of a poor editing job.
