review 1: this book was very informative about jewish orthodox culture. I really liked that. it was also informative about how difficult it can be for people (specifically female cliques) entrenched in their traditions to wholeheartedly accept someone new that shares their fundamental beliefs, but sees things in a different way.the narrator is first person plural. that was hard for me. if the voice is in first person, I like to know exactly who is speaking. after I read the author's notes at the end, I understood better why she used this voice.
review 2: I loved this book! I would have given it 5 stars, but some of the writing was just a little awkward. The ladies, members of a tight-knit orthodox Jewish community in Memphis, were so much fun to get to know. I am a Morm
... moreon and grew up in a community where there were not many other Mormons, but now live in a majority Mormon community. I could relate to these Auxiliary ladies who have strong religious traditions and feelings, and who want to pass those on to their children. Their foibles, fears, insecurities, goodness, etc. resonated with me because I have seen these same qualities in myself and my community. less

Interesting to learn about the culture. Somewhat slow-moving plot. Thought provoking.
