review 1: Looking for a 3.5 star option. Tova Mirvis is a good writer and storyteller and I like the premise of this voyeuristic, criss-crossed stories of NYC residents. The city itself is almost a character- with side line of black trench-coated adventurers beneath the city in closed subway stations or night crawls to the top of the Brooklyn Bridge. It plays nicely off the highly revealing window view into various apartments on a block where one is truly never alone, frequently exposed, and often lonely. Adultery, identity, parenthood, aging, all the good life-cycling motifs I enjoy in a book. A few epetitive or slow spots, a few predictable plotlines, and just enough oddball coincidences and references to places, art, famous NY personas to keep me fully eng... moreaged.
review 2: It's hard to interweave stories of people's lives without it seeming forced and I have to disagree with those who felt the stories were contrived. I liked the understated way in which the author described desperation--the desperation to finish a dissertation, the desperation to be the perfect mother, the desperation to make a connection. The stories and plotlines weren't so outlandish that they weren't believable; perhaps it's hard to fathom such intersections if one can't experience them firsthand. less

An interesting look of life in New York City through a window and how people's lives connect.

Kept me interested, but I didn't like the ending. Unfulfilling.

Ok, I don't think I would go crazy recommending it.
