review 1: I have read several of St. John's Clans of Kalquor books, and I enjoyed "Alien Rule" as well -- just not as much as a couple of the others in the series.Jessica and her friend Michaela are stranded on Plasius, and are forced to pick a Kalquorian clan to protect themselves from vengeful Earthers. Jessica catches the eye of Clajak, who sweeps her off her feet and into bed.Jessica eventually falls hard for Clajak, and his clanmates Bevau and Egilka. There is extensively detailed menage sex that goes on (and on and on) for for first 2/3 of the of story. Then the plot actually begins when we learn that there is a conspiracy to kill Jessica and Clajak's clan. St. John certainly knows how to write steamy menage passages, but there's just too much of it here. Every encounter is th... moree penultimate sexual experience, every climax is out-of-this-world and over-the-top. It gets...dare I say it..boring.However, the suspense associated with the assassination attempt keeps you turning the pages, and Jessica and her clan are likeable characters. So...3 stars because the series really is fun.
review 2: Why did I give Alien Rule 2 stars? It's difficult to rate it because I enjoyed all the characters, enjoyed the story, thought the sex scenes were super sexy and wasn't distracted by poor writing. If fact, I liked these characters better then the 1st book. The problem is more personal..."it's me, not you." I've gotten to a place lately where I like there to be fewer erotic scenes and more story. I prefer a love story with some hot erotica as opposed to erotica with a love story. I skimmed or even skipped the last few erotic scenes in Alien Rule. So as much as I enjoyed the yummy alpha males and lead female character with spunk, I can't honestly give a high rating to a book that I didn't read every e-page. Anyway, I didn't want my my low rating to discourage others when trying to decide if they would read this book.One warning. Story contains "dubious" sexual consent. Thought that information should be out there for those sensitive to such issues. less
