review 1: If you want to be mislead about God read this book. Author misleads about God's guidance.God is clear in the scriptures he does not want us pursuing materialist goals. He want us to be preachers and teachers of his heavenly Kingdom. He says is in the Bible and it is clear. (1 John 2:16, 17) " because everything in the world—the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the showy display of one’s means of life—does not originate with the Father, but originates with the world. Furthermore, the world is passing away and so is its desire, but the one who does the will of God remains forever."So why would God want someone to open a cupcake shop, when God knows that it is a part of the world and that it will be passing away? Oh wait, I know!Author makes b... moreookoo bucks selling this lies and false teachings. Author also does not do research. Anyone that has researched the 'cross' knows that Jesus did not die on a cross, but an upright stake. Romans at that time did not use crosses to put criminals to death. But author relies on more false religious teachings, instead of taking 30 minutes to do some real research. Once again, why?Perhaps she is lazy, perhaps the publishing company does not want the truth written and published, because then they would have other lies exposed and more and more people would not buy the books. This book was so bad I could not finish it. My loyalty to God impelled me to put it down, and not read all the lies about him and his son in it.
review 2: Tricia Goyer is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. Both her novels of historical fiction and tales of Amish life stir emotion within me, unlike most other books I've read. The Memory Jar is no different. Getting to know Sarah and Patty through their memory jars, and Sarah's flashbacks to their childhood, was a sweet and endearing way to develop these characters. Although Patty has been gone for 2 years, she is an integral part of the story because she was the first person to accept Sarah exactly as she was and to encourage her God-given creativity, a creativity viewed as "fancy" to most in the Amish community. The next person to truly understand Sarah would be Jathan, an Amish man from Ohio, who has landed in Montana, where Sarah lives, to escape the harsh reality that he's a little different, too. I found myself feeling as though I was peeking into something sacred -- a God-ordained story of love and loss, dreams and reality, but most of all, the lives of two people, both carrying around pain in their hearts, as well as hopes for the future. Hopes that as an Amish man and woman, were not readily accepted by their communities, or even their families. It took finding each other to allow themselves to do that which would make these hopes and dreams come to life. But it was not easy. Releasing years of pain in order to accept love never is. Standing up for what you truly believe is not either.I smiled.I laughed.I cried. A lot. If you are a lover of Amish fiction, you will adore this story. If you haven't read Amish fiction before, you'll want to begin here. The Memory Jar is the first book in the Seven Brides for Seven Bachelors series. I simply cannot wait for the next six installments! less
