review 1: The first half of this book was amazing - the pacing was perfection, the storytelling was excellent, and I was totally in love. It was a modern day murder mystery and it rocked. Then I got to the second half of the book and the sirens and... well, it went downhill pretty quickly. It made no sense at all. That was its huge problem. The story went from awesome to "wtf?" There were plot holes and loads of them. Nothing the characters did was remotely logical and the author didn't bother to explain it. I kept wondering why the editor didn't say something, why they didn't fix the glaringly obvious issues. Everything from the reason Justine died to the reason the many, many men in the book died, was ridiculous. As was the way they died. The author simply didn't bother explaining... more the whys or the hows of anything and as a result you are left with a garbled mess that doesn't make any sense. Disappointing for sure.
review 2: My 13-year-old read this and raved about it, insisting that I had to read it. So I did--I probably would have stopped at the 3rd chapter, but I kept reading for her. I'm glad I did, because the plot definitely picked up. I was never really able to connect with the protagonist, however--she was too timid at the beginning and her change was too rapid. My biggest problem, though, was the end. It felt more like the author just stopped instead of an ending. Way too many unanswered questions. less
