review 1: Okay so I'd never heard of this book before and had just grabbed it from the library and I have to say I'm slightly disappointed. This is why. From the beginning I thought it'd be a good mystery/fantasy novel, but the longer it went on I felt it very lacking. The romance slowly began to take over the plot until the plot became background noise. I thought the author could have done a whole lot more with the story without becoming as rushed and odd as I felt it became. I thought the whole mystery aspect was building up only to crumble away a little past the beginning. There was only one, maybe two suspects the entire time, and the main character hardly did anything to solve the mystery. The answers were all given to her, more or less, without conflict. I thought there could'... moreve been more suspenseful moments where she is trying to figure something out while an actual threat looms over. I didn't think the antagonist was doing its job, although maybe there wasn't even an antagonist? I also thought it started out as a mild fantasy with a mere mention of the paranormal and then kind of heaped on the fantasy aspect towards the end. It was sort of like.. at first you knew it would have a sort of fantasy element but then the element takes over completely. There were almost no surprises, and one of the main things, her sisters death, was built up slowly then answered quickly and shoved aside. I thought that could've been more shocking, but instead was kind of a dud. Also, the "twist" at the end wasn't much of a twist. I disliked how much foreshadowing went on in the book, because by the end I personally felt it was too obvious. This book isn't something I'd recommend.
review 2: Although I liked the general idea behind the siren concept, I think it wasn't incorporated into the story correctly and enough. When I saw the cover of this book and read the summary, I thought it would be full of adventure, mystery, and, of course, sirens. However, I was seriously disappointed when I didn't even find out about the sirens until the last third of the book and even then it didn't seem thought out well. The ideas were there, but were jumbled up in an order that didn't make any sense. A huge chunk of the first half of the book was completely unrelated and unnecessary. The characters, too, they were all uninteresting, dull, and predictable. At the beginning of the book, they weren't introduced well enough, and later, when more characters appear, they weren't fully explained. I had no idea what was going on more than half the time, and it really irritated me. Another thing that really annoyed me was the fact that I had so many questions at the end of the book that were unanswered and unacknowledged. It felt as if the author didn't even consider the reader and how little we were left with. Such incompleteness made me think the author just gave up or didn't revise or something. The only reason why it isn't a one star is because Simon is pretty decent and almost anything mermaids is always on my to-read list. However, I would still really not recommend this book. less
