review 1: I thought this was a pretty good little mystery at the beginning but it kind of came apart for me in the end. The premise that a baseball player would have a sideline in this day and age of million dollar salaries is far-fetched but if you put reality out of your mind the story of a veteran relief pitcher being a part-time detective is kind of interesting. I hope that the author has a sequel in mind because it would be interesting to see if the character will continue baseball or go into detecting full time.
review 2: I loved The Set-Up Man for a lot of reasons. I'll just cut to the chase and list my top five: 1. It's gum-shoe noir at its finest without having to hearken back to the past. 2. It's a great send-up of Bay Area culture - where a million dollar a ye... morear pro baseball pitcher is considered vaguely down-and-out and has to pick up private eye work on the side. 3. Johnny Adcock is Sam Spade meets Tug McGraw - as if that isn't enough reason alone to read the book. 4. I'm great at guessing plot lines and I just wasn't sure where this one was going. 5.
