When I was at school, one of the books that really stuck in my imagination was Turn Of The Screw by Henry James, a quietly horrific tale that I would find myself thinking about in my free time and always loving, even after my teacher almost ruined the horror with his soprano shout of “Peter Quint! You Devil!”.
We were treated in English class to the movie version entitled The Innocents, which was an incredible piece of black and white gothic magnificence. Now it seems the next generation is getting their own version entitled The Turning, starring Finn Wolfhard and Mackenzie Davis It is set to be directed by Floria Sigismondi who directed the excellent The Runaways and Spielberg is an executive producer on the project so this should be box office gold and give a new generation the same nightmares we endured – and came back for more of, time and again.
