review 1: I just read the Hex Hall series and was totally into all this magic and witchcraft thing so I wanted to read another YA novel with witchcraft in it and chose this one. It was a mistake! In general, I liked Tessa but I was always rolling my eyes at her naivety! There are these two opponent groups which try to win her over to join one of them. They're supposed to be all kinds of sorcerers, which is really interesting but the book doesn't really concentrate on the magic. That's what bothered me the most about this book. I mean, when you're talking about witches and magic you should fully explain what they can all do and why etc. and I also expect the story to focus on the magic stuff as well as other parts of the story. This book though concentrated more on the relationship b... moreetween the two main characters (Tessa & Hayden) and their dramatic families. Don't get me wrong, I like to read a good love-story but when there's something as exciting as magic, why not focus on that too and keep a balance?! Back to Tessa's naivety, it just bothered me that she didn't question the teams' motives at first but rather later in the story and only because other people pointed it out. Plus, she takes her magic almost for granted. When people would come up to me and tell me I had magic, I would flip out and go crazy and when I would realize that all is true, I would try to practice my magic all the time and ask non-stop questions. Not so much for Tessa, she's pretty much like 'Ok, great, I'm a witch...what's for dinner?' Let's see what her relationship with Hayden is like...it's the typical bad-boy-falls-for-good-girl-and-vice-versa scheme. I mean, who doesn't love the bad boys?! That's always a bonus for me ;)but I find it really paradox if a supposedly bad boy gets all cheesy and turns over to the good side way too fast. There were several points in the book when I just couldn't believe Hayden's actions, they seemed so fake and didn't fit to his bad-guy persona (which he was supposed to be). As a bonus on all this, the author seemed to rush through the story without focusing on anything in particular (she didn't forget though to point out how gorgeous Hayden looks like....yeah after the 5th time we all know it!) and stuff concerning the magic and witchcraft wasn't really explained, besides Tessa didn't have that many questions either (which is kind of strange...). After reading about 2/3 of the book, I pretty much skimmed through the rest just to find out how the story ends and how Tessa and Hayden end up (together or not). When I reached the end, I couldn't believe what I was reading, it seemed to be the tip of the iceberg of this whole fake and cheesy love story...So all in all, reading this book was a waste of time :(
review 2: I totally enjoyed this book, hard to believe the same author wrote this and Blind Date, Checkmate. So dramatically different and yet both well done!!The story line, characters were wonderful. Very easy to visualize the homes, characters, the groups in the lunch room. I especially enjoy Bree, the little sister. It will have you laughing, crying, ahh the memories of being a teen. What a wonderful YA book. I can't wait for book 2. This almost senior citizen was given this book in return for an honest review. less
