Taking place in the course of one night in a small Oklahoma town, The Deputy is a wham-bam-thank-you mama read which rarely pauses to count the dead, and they do pile up. The book is never less than engaging, and perhaps Gischler’s biggest accomplishment is keeping you riveted to a story that unfolds in less than 24 hours.
