review 1: Zora and Me is a well-written, compelling story setting a young Zora Neale Hurston and her gift for storytelling at the heart of a mystery in the black Florida town where she grew up. Unlike many books in the genre that ring false by turning historical characters into supersleuths, however, Zora and Me is much more than a mystery. It's a story about family relations and race relations in the early 20th century. It's also a story about storytelling itself, the roles it plays in people's lives and the effects it can have on events. And it's an introduction for young readers to a great author who they can read later on – and if Zora and Me is itself a work of fiction, the epilogue is straight biography. This aspect, however, may be the least interesting for young readers, w... moreho probably haven't heard of Zora Neale Hurston and who are probably too young to read her books.
review 2: This fictionalized story of Zora Neale Hurston's childhood centers on a murder that is committed in her hometown of Eatonville, FL. Eatonville was the first all-black town, officially incorporated after the Emancipation Proclamation. The setting plays a pivotal role - as the central mystery has strong ties to race relations between the black folk of Eatonville and the white folk in the neighboring town.I enjoyed this tale. I will need to provide some background help for my rural fifth graders who are reading this book. We'll also need to discuss the frequent use of the n-word and how that word has evolved in the 100+ years since the setting of the book. less
