review 1: Marie's Tempting Reads ARC Review: This story took me by surprise. I was expecting there to be a lot of drama and very little else. While there was indeed a lot of drama, there was still a TON of romance. That's A Promise was full of passion, heart, and the story was heart pounding sexy! I absolutely LOVED the characters and the story was VERY well put together and extremely believable. This felt like this could of happened to a REAL person and I was just floored by how much I liked That's A Promise.I felt everything with this story was well thought out and the details from the characters, to places, to the events was outstanding and just made perfect sense. The struggles and emotion behind the story was both astounding and worthy of attention. I was grabbed from the begin... morening of this story to the very end. There was several tear inducing moments in the story as well as some sigh worthy ones too. The ending threw me for a loop and left me gaping in surprise..in the best way! I can't wait to find out what happens in book two.A FIVE SHOOTING STARS is what this baby deserves and is exactly why I gave it to this romance. Victoria Klahr has a knack for both drama and awe-inspiring and REALISTIC romance that will leave you gripping your seat for more while frustrated because you have to wait for the next book to find out what happens next.
review 2: This is the first book ever that I only give 3 1/2 starts to. This has nothing to do with the writing, or the story, at all. Some content and the Heroine were enough to bring the star rating down, but the story was pure genius. I've actually never had this level of feelings for a book before. Will I read it again? I'm not sure that I will, but I'll never say never. Am I glad that I read it this time? Absolutely. The more I think about the story, the more the book itself grows on me.Josie starts out as a broken young woman recovering from a horrific life event. She's changed because of it, so much so that she withdrew from everything for a time. Two years after this occurrence, she finally transfers to a college away from home and decides to try it out in the world again. She's gone with her best friend, Seth, who she has been inseparable from since childhood. He was there with her through the tragedy, and was the one who saved her from the depression that took her. He's also the one she's in love with, though she doesn't believe he loves her as deeply. Enter Blake. He's sweet, a little intense, and a total gentleman. He wants to take care of Josie, and he falls in love quickly, though he doesn't say it right away. He takes issue with Seth right off the bat, but Seth has the same issue with him. Without her realizing it, they are both hoping they are the one for her without making her feel pressured to choose. After Josie and Blake have dated for a few months, she takes him home to meet her dads. Yes, dads plural. I thought that was a nice change of pace. I've never read a story about a character with two dads, so I really enjoyed seeing this interaction. Anyway, back on track, he meets her dads, and she decides she's fallen in love with him. Even though, she thinks about how he'll never make her feel the way Seth does, and Seth will always hold the largest piece of her heart basically. Then the twist comes, but you don't know exactly what the twist is until later in the book. But the story is written in a flashback style, so you know that this is a pretty pivotal piece of the book by the things that she says in the present day text. She's been alluding to a secret that Blake held, and how it crushed her to learn it. But when she meets his mom, his mom acts a little weird. There had been a discussion while they were with her dads that makes you kind of connect the dots, or at least foreshadows to it a little. After the meeting, Josie overhears Blake and his mom arguing and he takes off, leaving Josie alone at his mom's house overnight. This is the start of him pulling away, until eventually they break up.They spend a significant amount of time apart, and she begins to feel physically lonely. This is part of Josie that I find annoying, and the aspect of the book that brought the star rating down for me. There was so much sex in an otherwise entirely promising story. The story has me so invested, but I felt like scenes were inappropriately broken up by sex. Not to mention that Josie seemed to only want sex. of course, she was only looking at the two men that she thought she was in love with, and both before and after sleeping with Blake she slept with Seth. This is when she first fell in love with him, even though they had been in each others' back pockets their whole lives. I felt like she was a pretty vapid girl without the sex. Seth still doesn't tell her he loves her, though, because he also doesn't believe that she loves him as deeply. And since he'd rather continue being close to her in anyway possible than lose her because he's fallen for her, he tells her things have to go back to the way they were when he thinks she wants to end their physical relationship. But they took pictures together. Dirty, naughty, sexy pictures. And he's an aspiring photographer. Eventually these pictures are seen, in an art gallery, and she is forced to admit to Blake, whom she has reconciled with by this time, that she did sleep with Seth even though she told him she never had. They don't break up, but she has it out with Seth, and they part ways. For the remainder of the book. It doesn't stop her from loving and wanting and needing him, though. Then the unthinkable happens and we are reminded of that time at Blake's mother's. Josie is mentally transported back to the place she was in before transferring schools, and this time she doesn't have Seth to help her out of it. And she's in even a little deeper this time around. She makes some hasty decisions, and winds up alone. Then the present day happens (which has actually been happening all throughout the book), and she has to face the consequences of her hasty decisions. Things don't go well for her. And the epilogue comes a bit too quickly for my liking, but perfect for a trilogy/series if I'm being honest. Now I just need to find out if Josie ends up alone, or does she end up with the one that holds her heart, or the one that she always knew loved her? less
