review 1: FIVE BIG FAT STARS!!!!!I have read all three of Victoria Twead's 'Two Old Fools' books (a fourth is on the way!) and, for me, this was the best, outstanding, it had everything. A great start, funny moments already in the first few chapters. Hilarious scenes with Joe-poor Joe! We learn that Victoria doesn't like going to the hairdresser (and the reasons)-then the next moment there's trouble with Joe's coiffure! Priceless! Another lovely humorous episode is the 'Coffee at the Carrefour'. So brilliantly told. Knickers-funny stories of extremes of knickers, then, the informative kind where red underwear is traditional at New Year (and grapes). Victoria creates a bit of suspense in this book-about Joe-it never seems to be the right moment to ask him or she would get side-tracke... mored doing something else and in the end I was yelling at my kindle 'WILL YOU JUST ASK HIM!!!!!' some heart-warming scenes-eg. Christmas Eve- the Procession consists of real donkey, Mr and Mrs Ufarte as Mary and Joseph and their newborn son as the baby Jesus. Just lovely. Dogs are dressed as sheep and bedlam ensues! Other traditions we learn about are the Holy Innocents Day (I hadn't heard of this before) and cakes with surprises in them-in Joe's case-a nasty surprise! As before, Victoria puts her stamp on the book by including recipes to give a real flavour for the setting-(the Sweet Potato Mash sounds yummy! ...and the Honey barbecued Chicken-mmmmmm). There is an accompanying recipe link for each chapter and they are all together in a dedicated section at the end of the book. There was one chapter where I really learned a lot about a certain type of creature, seemingly innocent-looking creatures yet deadly effects, devastating. A thoroughly enjoyable book with laughter and tears, varied writing techniques including letters, emails, facebook threads, twitter entries, lists(!), photos throughout the book, even video cameos-there are a couple of these: What an excellent idea to include them; one is a link to youtube to a mini film of the kittens playing, about three minutes, it's very well done, excellent quality visual and music. An absolutely lovely reading experience. This is a wonderful, memorable book.
review 2: I thoroughly enjoyed this second memoir of Victoria Twead's time in Spain. It didn't quite live up the first book, but the descriptions were still evocative and often funny. I happen to love cats so the kitten subplot appealed to me (and I even watched the YouTube video that was referenced in my ebook), but I could imagine it wouldn't be as of much interest for someone who's not such an avid animal lover. less
