review 1: Lovely lovely read! Although I felt the book started off a little slowly, it soon caught my attention. Having recently moved to Spain myself, I could identify with so much of the author's experience of Spain and the Spanish way of life, and having lived in Africa, there were a lot of things happening that could just as well have happened in village life there - especially the the chicken-over-the-wall incident! The book is written with lots of humorous insight, and just enough detail to illustrate the stories without being overwhelming. The book makes for a light and funny read, while also managing to inform and enlighten. I loved reading it! Will definitely be reading the rest of the series. Well done, Victoria Twead, for drawing me into your life with such skill, and mak... moreing me want to stay there!
review 2: I bought "Chickens, mules and two old fools" expecting the usual ex-pat drivel bemoaning the Spanish. So, imagine my pleasure to find out just how wrong I was. Instead, Victoria Twead delivers an excellently written and highly polished tale of her (and her husband's) eventful and often bumpy move from the UK to a small rural Andalucian village. The narrative is carries you along, moving seamlessly from one hilarious situation to another, the characters (both human and animal) positively bristle with life, and the recipes firmly root the story in Spain. less
