review 1: This was a rather unusual book. Read more like an introspective novel than a mystery. Forest cop Lance finds a dead body, a Norwegian tourist. He has an inkling early on who did it, but figures he can't say anything. Tries to justify it to himself. Knows he can't call himself a good cop anymore after this. He also tries to figure out what happened to an Ojibwe Indian who disappeared a hundred years ago, around the same time one of his ancestors came to this country from Norway. There is a cop from Norway who is involved in the investigation. The ending is, well, no quite an ending and I'm going to read the second one in the trilogy to see how it is resolved.
review 2: The author clearly has writing skills. The potential for a good novel is there but the author
... more has chosen to write a treatise on inner conflict that left me wanting. There are a number of concurrent themes and lots in this book that I wanted resolution. I would have given a full 4 stars for that. Unfortunately, nothing has an ending and the reader is left saying WTF when all is said and done. I don't know if the next book in the trilogy will finalize anything. I will not be reading it to find out. I gave 2 stars because I did not enjoy the book after I was finished. less

Overall it was a good read, but from the reviews on this I had expected more than it delivered.
