review 1: Fantastic depiction of life and characters on Lake Superior's north shore. Rich and evocative setting drawn from Sundstol's time living in this area. History, genealogy, geology, climate, immigration and blood ties converge at the murder of a Norwegian tourist. Parallel stories of murder, separated by more than 100 years, deftly unfolding among the dense forests of the upper midwest. This is the first of the trilogy. Scandinavian noir at it's finest, with an American setting. Highly recommended for setting, characterization and complex themes.

The ending, without a spoiler here, left me wondering if Lance made the right decision....Overall, a really good mystery set in one of my all-time fave places in the world! less
