review 1: Tell me more about the characters? The characters in the book are irresponsible and not doing very well in school. The principal is a very thoughtful person and is trying to get some sense into their heads and give them one more chance. In the book , Mr. Culpepper tells them their grades said enough for the way they're acting in school.Do they have a voice of their own?Yes, they have their way of showing what they want to be and what they want do in life depending if they care to even pass their other classes. In the text it says LaShonda wasn't holding back just because Mr. Culpepper had a little power.Does cause and effect happen correctly?Yes because they know the cause and it is their choice to decide how their effect outcome will be. In the story, there outcome will pr... moreobably be them failing their classes if they don't put any effort in making their future worth it.
review 2: **Used as a booktalk book**I really enjoyed this book. While it was short, it gave a look into a group of outcast students who go to a gifted and talented school in Harlem who embark on a school-wide project immersing themselves (and taking sides!) into the Civil War. They find out along the way that some of the race issues from the Civil War are still prevalent today and work together to discuss their impact. I was surprised how it ended. This book is appropriate for today because despite the progress we have made as a nation when it comes to race, there are still pockets - especially in middle school/high school where it still comes up and this novel acknowledges that well. This is the first book of the series, and I am interested in how the rest of the series plays out. As a side note, there are quite a few subtle nuances that hint back to some of his other works, if you are familiar with them. They always made me smile when I came across them. :)I would place this book into the hands of a student who enjoys Civil War history, is gifted, or perhaps (as a stretch) is having difficulty dealing with race/racism with a guidance counselor and would benefit from reading about how other students dealt with these issues.Students will enjoy this book for its plot, characters, and how relevant it is to today (published in 2010, students are texting, using Facebook, and the word "photoshopping" is in there more than once). less
