review 1: “Dope sick”Walter Dean MyersIn the book “Dope Sick” there was really only a few settings but there was a major one. I’ll talk about them all. A few settings in this book were the Home Depot, his apartment with his mom, “Dustys”. And the one that put the whole story together, the abandoned apartment building. Now the mood, the mood is very difficult to describe, but the mood in my opinion was very stressful for all the characters in the book. The reason I say this is because most of the time they are all running from the cops and trying to find a way to support the dope habit. The characters in this story are Rico, Kelly, “Moms”, Lauryn, Maurice, Dusty, Brian, Officer Glaffone, and LIL J. These are the names of the characters. Rico- Shoot the undercover cop... mores duri big drug bust and always blames LiL J. Flatt & StaticMoms- Lil J’s mother, who has major depression and drinking issues. Flat & StaticLauryn- Lil J’s “baby mama” also his ex girlfriend. Flat & StaticBrian- Lil J’s son. Flat & StaticMaurice- Lil J’s who he was going to home depot for jobs. Flat & StaticDusty- Big Time Drug Dealer. Flat & StaticOfficer Glaffone- undercover cop who gets shot at the end of the book. Flat & StaticKelly- Guy in the building who winds up dying and getting Lil J’s Blame. Round & DynamicLil J- Jeremy is his real name, he gets blamed for shooting a cop during a drug bust but meets Kelly who make him go through his life. Round & DynamicI enjoyed this book a lot. It kept my attention, it was realistic, almost like a movie in my head. This book you have to like the suspects and want to know what goes on in the world in a way kind of. There is only one thing i dislike about this book and that is that the book just cuts off at the end there's not really a solution to a story. anyways in my eyes i thought this was a great book and i think i would suggest this book to anyone that wants to read it.
review 2: Over time I have become a huge Walter Dean Myers fan. His story, and his stories, catch the attention and then the hearts and minds of my students. Dope Sick is an excellent example. Lil J is caught in the environment in which he lives and the choices he has made and makes. When it seems he has hit rock bottom and will be just another ghetto kid lost to drugs and the streets, he is offered, it seems, a chance to set his course in a new direction. Dope Sick is an excellent example of magical realism and readers who have seen Click can relate. Although some reviewers believe Lil J will turn his life around, I felt Myers left that open to readers. The different glimpses he gets of his life show the choices he does have when it seems he has absolutely none, but in the end I'm not sure Lil J was even lucid while with Kelly. less
